Analysis Of Rene Sat With Night At Bush Lake - 1463 Words
Rene sat with me in the darkness down on the dock at Bush Lake. The water was black. Soft ripples on the lake scattered what little glare shown from the streetlight on the other side of the lake. The Spring air was cool as the crickets chirped in the tall, distant grass. My friend Keith had wandered with Andrea down the path to the small peninsula where the picnic area waited in the night. The swimming beach lay on the other side of the lake. We were alone in the world. This is before the city paved the woodchip running trails along the lake, before the large houses encroached on Hyland Park, before they bulldozed the old abandoned cabin on the lakeside near Bush Lake Road. I was young enough to still feel excited when a woman sat next to me. The beer had run out, but she and I didn’t need anymore. I wanted to forget that anything existed outside of that moment in the darkness. We were alone with only the smooth wooden boards of the dock, the night air and each other for the rest of the night. I had just buried my brother a few days before. I had only a day or two left before I was to return to Camp Pendleton. A month before then, I d returned from my first deployment to Okinawa. I d been gone for half a year. When I d first arrived at Minneapolis/Saint Paul Airport three weeks earlier I d grabbed my sea bag from the baggage claim, after I d met my mom, dad and brother at the gate. Underage Drinking Annotated Bib. - 3325 Words
Underage Drinking: Annotated Bibliography Alexis Richter Comp 2 February 27th, 2010 Engs, Ruth C. Why the Drinking Age Should be Lowered: An Opinion Based Upon Research. CQ Researcher. N.p., 20 Mar. 1998. Web. 9 Feb. 2011. . The article â€Å"Why the Drinking Age Should be Lowered: An Option based upon Research†is about twenty years of research based underage drinking done by Ruth Engs. It talks about the way things were in the past compared to how things are now. The research done for this article shows that binge drinking is mostly found in the age below 21 due to the lack of being taught responsible drinking habits. In this article there are many statistics dealing with drinking at a college level over a long span of†¦show more content†¦Web. 18 Feb. 2011. The article titled â€Å"Vermont Considers Lowering Drinking Age to 18†is about the Republican state representative for Vermont, Richard Marron’s view on lowering the drinking age after reading Mr. McCardell’s newspaper column. Marron wants to propose a bill that lowers the drinking age to 18. However, federal support is keeping other legislators from signing the bill as co-sponsors. â€Å"Mr. Marrons bill is unlikely to pass, mainly because if it did, Vermont would lose $9.7 million in federal money for highway maintenance, grants available only if a state sets its drinking age at 21. And the states public safety commissioner and health department, along with several legislators, argue that lowering the drinking age would simply worsen the problem of under-age drinking and drunken driving†(Belluck). Even though in this article it states that there are some representatives that would not be for signing the bill for personal reasons, the only other thing that it comes down to from a legislative point of view is transportation funds. This article has to do with my thesis because it deals with taking action to lower the drinking age. It also talks about how no matter what kids are going to find the way around the drinking age. For exam ple, 18 year olds are traveling to Canada to drink because the legal age there is 18. This source really contributes to my overall understanding of the topic, because it taught me a new issue to lowering

Natural Disaster Responses in California Free Essays
For years, geologists have been predicting that a major earthquake will occur in california. In october 1989, a 7.1 quake hit the san francisco area. We will write a custom essay sample on Natural Disaster Responses in California or any similar topic only for you Order Now Five years later, northridge and southern california experienced an earthquake of similar magnitude. Why too many people is still coming to places like california where earthquakes and natural disasters are predicted? In my point of view, these are the strongest reasons: the most popular place to emmigrate, job opportunities, and better schools, education, and systems. California is the most popular place to emmigrate because it has a great weather, there are too many touristic atractions, many different places you can go to, and there is too many people that come from the same place you came from. I want to use mexican people as an example, they all come for one reason, â€Å"Succed†. They also know they will find a lot of people from mexico in california, specially in los angeles. They also kown that probably about half of the people california would talk spanish so I won†t be really hard for them to communicate with others. Job opportunities is another really strong factor that induces people to come and look for a better life. There are so many jobs in california that is almost a sure thing that anyone would get a job, educated or not educated people, or even if you are not legally able to work in usa you will still get a job. You can easily support yourself with a minimun wage, because you will probably get about 45 or 50 dollards a day when in places like mexico you will just get five dollards for the whole day and doing a really heavy job. Also relatively speaking, everything is expensive in mexico, I mean, here you can get or buy whatever you need for a low price, and you will still have some money left, but in mexico, you will never have enough money unless you are in the high class. â€Å"Schools,†california has great schools, great education level, and better systems than other places. Ucla and usc are some of the great universities california has and if you think about it, everything is related, if you go to a good school and become a really educated person, you will get a really good job and make really good money and then you won†t really worry about a good future because with your education that wiil be garranty. Scientist, doctors, and some other educated people come to usa, not only to california because of all technology that is here and can be helpul. A lot of support from schools, people, and business are another reasons teat encourages you to keep going and get better everyday, and if one day you decide to go back to the place you came from your education will open lots of doors for you. In my personal point of view, I think some people are aware of the disasters that are predicted, some others don†t care or just don†t believe it, nad the other part just come to make some money and come back to their native places. It is a true fact that so many people is still coming to california and when you hear about those things that are predicted, I†m sure you ask yourself why do people still come if they are aware of what†S going on? , well if you think about it I†m sure you will come out with almoist the same answers I just told.
